About Me: Work & Life

So, you're nosy, eh? Well, then... Let's get started.

Work

I'm a systems administrator focused on integrating Windows and GNU/Linux systems, managing groupware systems (first and foremost: Microsoft Exchange Server) and administering database and directory services. I've got a good amount of paid work under my belt, but I started (unknowing that this would be my professional future) on the systems administration track at the young age of 13, when I began to take ownership of the previously orphaned IT in my parents' travel agencies. Since then, I've worked up experience and knowledge in all three branches of the user-centric IT business: administration, support and training.

9 Nadim Haque & LampAs I believe that both open-source and proprietary software has its uses, I'm more than happy to work on both Windows and GNU/Linux systems. After all, the luxury of customization in the OSS world brings with it quite a few pains that more than meet (sometimes even exceed, unfortunately) the TCO of proprietary software made by companies that can throw a good chunk of money at producing feature-complete and fully supported products. My aim is to produce the best of both worlds.

I'm also certified in quite a few areas of the Microsoft world and have gained subject matter expert status in all of my work places.

There's a résumé page that will give you more of an idea of what I've been doing professionally.

The Arts

I'd like to call myself an all-round artist, but I don't paint or sculpt, so that's out. Instead, I've got a bit of an experimental streak, creating odd, highly experimental music, mostly in the ambient industrial genre. You may have heard it online; it probably won't play on the radio, since most radio stations only play music that is royalty-based. But you can jut over to Bandcamp and listen to my music, or perhaps even download it if it doesn't resonate with your brain in the wrongest ways possible.

On the backburner are a few writing projects. Perhaps I'll finish them at some point in time. I started writing in 2003 and have kept going since, producing three manuscripts that are in various stages of completion. If I manage to tie up and gag my inner critic, push him into a dark corner of my brain and get at it, I may complete and ship those some day. Or post stories and novel fragments in the Audiovisuals section of this web site.

Personal Things

If you're really interested, read this; otherwise, stop. I enjoy reading (this usually goes into scientific non-fiction and science fiction) and photography, am a huge fan of both utopian and dystopian TV science fiction (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Fringe, just to name a few) and enjoy a wide variety of music, ranging from classical via new wave to electronic genres. You'll probably find a ton of writings covering what I'm interested in and passionate about in the blog.

And if anyone's really interested: I'm almost 30 years of age, am trying desperately to grow a beard and am interested in someone special who'll take long walks with me and engage in interesting conversations about science, politics, philosophy and music. (TMI? Don't say I didn't warn you!)
